After the tragedy
04.09.2012 00:00
On August 27 my mother was hit by a car on the Kodor highway and in forty minutes, not regaining consciousness died on the operating table. The sad brotherhood of the killed on the roads in Abkhazia this Monday has increased by a few people - in Ochamchira district a young woman died, leaving two children. The culprit of the accident was her husband, rushing at a speed of 200 kilometers.Annals of killed on our roads seems to be endless, as well as our irresponsibility.
We speak, write, carry out actions calling for speed limits and caution, but the race on our roads is ongoing and the list of deaths growing every week. There is a feeling that our society’s instinct atrophied. How many people, including children, must die for our drivers understand - there is not someone else's death, pain, that killing of someone else's life, you kill human inside yourself.
In such a tiny country like Abkhazia, suffering the war and long post-war difficulties, this race of disrespect to someone's life is doubly insulting. Our lives are germinated in each other, and he who does not realize it, does not realize his country, his home, his responsibility for the people. Stupid bluff is put up of other people's lives! Blatant savagery indicating moral deafness.
I was warmed by the help and warmth of friends, neighbors, classmates, acquaintances, but why we are so responsive at the time of the tragedy already happened, and so apathetic to its prevention?
Are we resigned to the fact that our people will continue to die on the roads, and after that we will bring flowers to their death bed?
This tough irony - first to kill a man and then mourn over him with all the force of collective empathy – tears my heart into pieces. We spend our best to death, we keep feeding it with our blood and tears, and in between we sit at the wheel and again turn on the speed.
This bad infinity must be stopped! Otherwise in Abkhazia soon there will be no family not hit by the car.
